HIP HIP HOORAY - IT'S MULTI-CULTURAL CHILDREN'S BOOK DAY! #ReadYourWorld - Mela and the Elephant

A MCBD 2019 Book Review of

Mela and the Elephant by [Phumiruk, Dow]
MELA AND THE ELEPHANT
By Dow Phumiruk
Illustrated by Ziyue Chen
Format: Picture Book
Sleeping Bear Press, 2018
#ReadYourWorld

(Book provided by the Publisher)
After denying her brother the chance to explore the riverbank because he had nothing to offer her, Mela must give up her own possessions in an attempt to find her way when she is lost. Just when she, like her brother, has nothing left to offer, she meets a kind elephant and learns that we always have something to give.
This fable offers an important lesson on kindness and value, as well as gives a glimpse into the culture of Thailand via it's art, text and informative author's note.
With it's engaging main character, interesting creatures, compelling plot (what child can't identify with getting lost) and exotic setting, this story will keep the reader interested from beginning to end and remind them we always have something to learn and that a little kindness goes a long way.
