Day Four - 1st Annual 12 Days of Christmas Write Christmas Challenge

"Creativity Calisthenics"

Has your creativity ever seemed to disappear? If so, I’ll let you in on a secret. You’re probably not giving it enough exercise.

To keep your creativity thriving, try to write something every day. What can you write? Anything--a letter, poem, short story, advertisement, paragraph or page, list, letter to the editor, obituary or book, movie or product review.

I start each morning off with a critique of a fellow writer’s work. Reviewing manuscripts with a critical eye tends to make my senses sharp for when I turn to my own creations. Next, depending on my mood, I choose one of the above types of writing as a creativity exercise. The exercise may or may not (again, depending upon my mood) be something associated with my writing-in-progress. The important thing is to challenge my creativity and keep its energy flowing.

If you’re not a creativity self-starter and work better by assignment, consider this your task. Write each of following words/phrases (letter, poem, short story, advertisement, paragraph, list, letter to the editor, obituary, book review, movie review, product review) on slips of paper.  Place the folded slips in a jar. Each day, sit down with your jar. Pull out a slip. For the next fifteen minutes, create something pertaining to the word on the slip.

For example, to make it fun and interesting, you can write a movie review from the point of view of a child, a parent, an animal or a fictional character. You can write a shopping list for a scientist or person in another occupation. You can write a letter from an imaginary person to a famous person or a famous person to your child self. The possibilities are endless! Just mix them up, consider them from several angles, and be creative!

Write a picture book story using as many words from this list as possible. Give yourself bonus points for using all of them. If this practice becomes a project, feel free to discard any words that don't serve your story. They will have done their job by inspiring something new!

Day Three - 12 Days of Christmas 1st Annual Write Christmas Challenge

MEET THE NEIGHBORS!

This transitional time between years is a great time to take stock of your writing, get creative juices flowing, and promote characterization in your works-in-progress.

How? First, make a list of your most complete creations along with their main characters and their problems. Put a star in front of those stories that are closest to submission and brackets around those that need more work. From the list of near-ready projects, take the names of each major character and write those names, along with the story titles and problems, on small slips of paper. Fold the slips in half and put them in a jar with a cover. Cover the jar, shake the contents and randomly select two slips of paper.
Now comes the challenging part—create a story of up to 650 words in which these two characters meet. You can choose from one of their original problems or create a new one -- just for them! Because you may be dealing with characters from different backgrounds and settings (different worlds, even) this exercise should prove fun. When you’re done, just reach your hand in and give it a go with another couple.

Even when you’ve finished, don’t throw out the jar or the slips. You can use the jar as a random motivator for when you can’t decide what work to focus on. Just stick your hand in the jar, pull a slip of paper and work on ONLY that MS for the next month, or until it’s finished, critted, polished and ready to submit!

BONUS *WORD WEAVING* CHALLENGE:

Write a picture book story using as many words from this list as possible. Give yourself bonus points for using all of them. If this practice becomes a project, feel free to discard any words that don't serve your story. They will have done their job by inspiring something new!

Day Two - 1st Annual 12 Days of Christmas Write Christmas Challenge

HAPPY 2nd DAY OF CHRISTMAS!

I hope, no matter what you celebrate, that the 25th brought peace and good will! If you have some time to write on this Boxing Day, I hope today's post will help you along.

As writers, we all recall days when we finally sit down to write and can't find a thing to write about.

When this happens, don't panic or even mention the word "writer's block." Just grab a pen or go to your computer, choose a writing exercise and begin writing. Writing exercises, such as the one featured here, will warm up the imagination, stretch the creative muscle and massage your muse.

"Word Weaving" is a random word exercise that's quick, challenging, motivating and best of all--fun. Both writers and poets can utilize this form of warm-up to begin their writing sessions or to write their way through a temporary block.  You'll be surprised at the results.

To begin this "Word Weaving" exercise, let your favorite dictionary fall open to any page. Close your eyes and land your pointer finger randomly on that page to choose a word. Write down the word. Repeat the process. Pick ten words and one bonus word in this fashion. Then, challenge yourself to use ten of the words in a story excerpt or poem of no longer than 200 words.

You can even choose words from "The Children's Writer's Word Book" or similar resource, or even grab a picture book from your shelf, rather than the dictionary. You can even apply the exercise directly to your "work-in-progress" by relating it to those characters, if desired.

For those who have less time, I did this for you, using  picture books from my extensive "To Be Read" pile onmy desk.

I got these words from flipping through HANUKKAH HAMSTER BY Michelle Markel and illustrated by Andre Ceolin and SANTA KNOWS by Cynthia and Greg Leitich Smith and illustrated by Steve Bjorkman. By all means write something other than a holiday story with them!

Have fun and write on! As always please leave your thoughts below!

And please feel free to share this post on Google Plus, Facebook, Facebook Groups, Twitter and Pinterest to spread the word so that we can have an even bigger and better challenge next year!

Day One - 1st Annual 12 Days of Christmas Write Christmas Challenge

MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all!

DON'T HAVE A LOT OF TIME TO WRITE TODAY? HERE'S A QUICK ONE!

Even during the most hectic holidays, you can keep your creative juices flowing. If a holiday crams your family in a car en route to a celebration, try to write a tongue twister for some fast and easy fun! Guests can create individual tongue twisters together or alone using a pencil, a piece of paper, a dictionary (optional) and the following basic formula:

Number the lines of a sheet of paper from 1 to 6. Put your name on Line 1 (Example: 1. CAMILLA).  Pass the page to the person on your right.  Fill out the next number on the list, a last name or word that can be a last name which begins with the same letter sound as name on Line 1 (Example: 2. CAPYBARA). Pass the page to the person on your right.  Write down an action that begins with the same letter sound as name on Line 1 (Example: 3. CREATES). Pass the page to the person on your right.  Write down a place or thing that begins with the same letter sound as name on Line 1 (Example: 4. COOKIES). Pass the page to the person on your right.  Write down a time period that begins with the same letter sound as name on Line 1 (Example: 5.  CHRISTMAS).  Pass the page to the person on your right. Write down a reason that begins with the same letter sound as name on Line 1 (Example: 6. TO COAX CHRISTMAS TO COMMENCE). Return the page to the person whose name is at the top of the page. That person should try saying the twister six times fast for lots of laughs. Above example: “CAMILLA CAPYBARA CREATES COOKIES TO COAX CHRISTMAS TO COMMENCE.”

It may sound like a silly exercise, but it does challenge you to consider words/language and come up with the best one, as well as demonstrates how fun a sentence can sound with some alliteration and consonance. Feel free to post your creations here.

HAVE A LITTLE MERRY TIME TO YOURSELF?

For those of you with a little more time. make a list of everything you love about the holidays. Pick one thing and run with it. Keep reading to see how I created my third book -- about one of my favorite Christmas things.

THE STAR IN THE CHRISTMAS PLAY was originally based upon a beloved camel from a Christmas Manger, my family put out when I was growing up.  I had always wanted to write a story about him.

When I finally decided to do so and the seeds of the story started germinating, the threads between plot and a camel character were just not connecting. The camel was supposed to arrive at the manger, and when he did, fit right in, so he didn't seem to have a problem. I considered what might have a problem.

Inspired by my daughter's childhood giraffe blanket, Raffi came into my head. Surely, a giraffe would have a problem fitting in the manger due to being TOO TALL! But it didn't really make sense that he would be in the manger, so my thoughts wandered in a different direction.

I have a theatre background and love plays and musicals, so I immediately leaned toward Raffi wanting to be a Star (movie). But that didn't quite work either due to his personality and other reasons.

My challenge became figuring out how a giraffe would overcome a problem and become a star. So I scribbled everything that came into my head - famous stars, both movie and star constellations. I wrote down the North Star and Star of Bethlehem.  That's when everything came together.

Finally, the pieces fit -- Raffi didn't need to be a movie star, just a kid who wanted a good role in a play. And his problem was that he was TOO BIG! Finally, the idea circle back to the manger that inspired it (although without a camel) and the title came to me -- The Star in the Christmas Play! And the solution -- well, you'll have to read the book to find out the clever solution.

Thank you for your time today. I hope this has helped inspire you! Please leave a comment if it did.

And please feel free to share this post on Google Plus, Facebook, Facebook Groups, Twitter and Pinterest to spread the word so that we can have an even bigger and better challenge next year!

GET READY for the 12 Days Of Christmas - Write Christmas Challenge

Credit: Cover Designed by Kayla Michelle

Despite experiencing a tough year, I have been blessed to be able to write through it all and have two picture books coming out next year, Moldilocks and the 3 Scares, illustrated by David Rodriguez Lorenzo (Sterling, 8/2019) and Let's Eat - Mealtimes Around the World, illustrated by Parwinder Singh (Beaming Books, Fall 2019). So while it's not easy, it can be done.

In an effort to pay that forward and inspire those who need a push, inspiration, or just an idea to run with, I have created the 12 Days of Christmas - Write Christmas Challenge.

Each and every day of the 12 Days of Christmas (Starting December 25, 2018 and running through to January 6, 2018) I will share writing tips and insights and provide a writing challenge! While this challenge is primarily for picture book writers, it can be adapted for writers of poetry and chapter books, as well.

Please sign up for my blog (to the right of the post title -- where it says "sign up via e-mail) and follow this challenge so you don't miss any of the twelve days.

I hope to make this challenge grow bigger and better every year and thank you for joining in!

Should you want or expect a quicker turn around time, please add the following Rush Fees to your order:

RUSH FEE(S): For Guaranteed Turnaround
If you require a same-day turnaround, there will be a $20 rush surcharge added to your order. If you require a one-day turnaround, there will be a $15 rush surcharge added to your order. For a two-day turnaround, there will be a $10 rush surcharge.

Of course, these require pre-approval before payment of fees.

WORD COUNT LIMIT - OVER THE LIMIT FEES
The rates above are for picture books for to 650 words or less. If your picture book is longer that this, there is a $5.00 surcharge for each additional amount up to 150 words.

So, for example a Manuscript of  740 words would have a $5 surcharge and a manuscript of 875 words would have a $10 surcharge. If you are adding your 1-2 line pitch at the top, which is fine and highly recommended, please add $5.00 to the total. Honed pitches will get you attention in queries and in twitter pitches so this step is very important!

For these rates you will receive a multi-level, line-by-line critique which discusses several aspects of writing a story (beginning, inciting event, characterization, motivation, stakes, character flaw, attempts at solving the problem, deep dark moment, renewal, ending and take-away value, IN ADDITION to title, word choice, poetic devices, sentence length, point of view, syntax, etc.). Sometimes, I am able share comp titles. PLEASE note if your manuscript requires a lot of work, we can only focus on first things first. In that case, I recommend repeat critiques to get the manuscript submission ready.

PLEASE NOTE: All critiques and packages will expire at the end of the year. Please use them before then, or lose them. It's hard for me to keep track of them from year to year. Please understand.

UPDATE: I am pleased to report that a # of my clients were recipients of *Writing with the Stars* Mentorships and *PBParty* Finalists and others have recently signed with Agents and gotten book deals. So proud and happy to be a part of their journey!

Here is what current clients have said recently:

9/13/19 “Lynne Marie is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the world of children’s literature, and she has the experience to back it up. She has the ability to zone in on the potential problems in your manuscript, and helps you find solutions.
